My daughter does lots of layers, tank tops under other tops. She also has several cardigans and zip up hoodies that she wears year round. Her teachers tend to keep the classrooms very cold. I am also a fan of shopping end-of-season clearance sales. Right now you can get some great buys with all the summer sales going on!

I always shop sales, but tj maxx and ross are the best!

My best tip right now is not to buy so much! Especially when the kids are young – 5,6,7.

I love blue jeans! They go with everything, and extremely durable for my two little rambunctious boys and can be worn more than once before washing most of the time. They help to stretch the budget a lot!

Used is always best! 1 persons trash is another’s treasure…. at least my daughters anyway!!! she LOVES to shop yard sales and garage sales… she knows if its been worn before it must be cool! :)

TJ Maxx and Marshalls are my favorite!!! I love buying school clothes there because it is so much cheaper than the mall. Clearance racks are awesome. I always always check those. Thanks, Tara!

I’m not a mom, but I used to wear different jackets with outfits (it was always so cold in the classrooms anyway) or I would change up accessories (you’d be surrpised how much this can change an outfit!). And ditto, the above poster, jeans go with everything!
Tracey
First and foremost I try to only buy clothes that are on sale. I try and stick with basics, things that can be layered and mixed and matched. I buy a lot of items (t shirts, khakis) that can be worn year round.

We layer, shop consignment, and never turn down a “hand-me-down.” Even if it’s not in great shape, it’s free and can usually be used as “play clothes.” Yes, I have my kids change out of their “school clothes,” when they get home to help the clothes last longer=don’t need to buy as much. We also buy quality jeans and pants and when they get too short or have holes in the knees, I cut them off and they get used as shorts (for my son) in the summer, which also saves $$.

With my teenager I always make sure I buy several cover-ups and tights to help make her summer wardrobe last longer at school.

Luckily, my girls are almost the same size, so they share clothes. For the expensive items, I try and find them on eBay.

We do the layering. A tshirt for summer looks great with a long sleeve tee during the winter.
Joni
I stretch his wardrobe by using hoodies over summer t’s. Thanks.
Nancy
I buy only a few pairs of jeans that are trendy or embellished. Simple classic jeans along with different tops, accessories, etc. can give you a whole different look every time you wear them.
Bargain Loving mom
We wear short sleeve tops year round by layering a long sleeve tshirt or thermal underneath.
